On Friday, Kroger said that they are going to pay up $1.2Bn to the different states and also the tribes of the Native Americans for settling claims that they aided in driving the opioid epidemic. Kroger has been accused of being the perpetrator of aiding the said epidemic through the sale of their lax oversight on pill sales.
Their retail chain has also claimed that they are being wrongly accused and not in any wrongdoing. They are going to continue defending themselves as the claims made are false.
The company made a statement:
“Kroger will continue to vigorously defend against any other claims and lawsuits relating to opioids that the final agreement does not resolve”
They have agreed to pay a total sum of $1.2Bn to the United States and also the local governments. Additionally. They are also going to pay the tribes of the Native Americans over a period of 11 years.
The company has posted about the net loss they faced for the second quarter. This is so as they have to face the brunt of the charge of $1.4Bn related to legal fees and settlements.
