The creator of boiling tortilla chips known as the “One Chip Challenge,” Paqui, is voluntarily taking the product off the market after a woman claimed her teenage son died from complications after eating one chip.
Two of the world’s spiciest peppers, the Carolina Reaper and the Naga Viper were used in the seasoning of the chips, which were sold individually. The packaging for each chip had a skull on the front and was designed to resemble a coffin.
Harris Wolobah Jr., 14, lost consciousness at home Friday afternoon after consuming the chip, according to his mother, Lois Wolobah. Lois said her son, a sophomore at Worcester Memorial High School, visited the school nurse Friday afternoon with a severe stomachache.
She told Harris died later that day at the hospital. A cause of death has not yet been released pending an autopsy.
